THE SPRAWL

a creative sanctuary for artists and makers

join the studio

welcome to your weekly art-practice club, where we revive our creative flow and make our WORK.

part support group, part magical artist open studio—hosted by me, Melissa, your resident artist, somatic educator, death doula and hype coach—coaxing your freakier, more authentic expressive spirit to sprawl on OUT.

the thing about people like us, is we get itchy and inflamed when we don’t make time for the shit we came here to make.

you have visions and creative longings that keep you up at night, same.

you feel the hot breath of fledgling ideas on the back of your neck 24/7, but alas the chores and the children and the news and the money-making-tasks seem forever more pressing.

this is creative, spiritual hygiene, we’re talking about here.

clearing the channel over and over, making things to feel alive.

a soft rebellion against expertise and certifications and good art vs. bad art

this is like ‘holy shit what if I die with these gifts inside me and my passions wither away like old kale in the back of the fridge’

NO we will not stand for it!

instead we shall sprawl!

we shall SPILL out in all directions, messy and unruly.

outcomes be damned!

the point is to retreat from the world together for a few sacred hours each week, so we can hear ourselves.

so we can get current with the currents moving through us.

so we can make the art, write the poem, sew the quilt, water the colors, and let the bouncy rhythms of creative process flush through our bodies.

more than anything this space is an affront to the voice that says what’s the point, there are way more important things I ought to be doing.

maybe there are. but for two days every week, we will give that voice a rest, and exercise the muscle of agendaless creative making. we do this to let go of control, and act as if our expression is a vital part of ourselves that must be tended to!

imma be real with you and admit this is a totally selfish endeavor - I need a space of devotion and accountability to do the things I claim to be so important and life-affirming for me - drawing, sewing, painting, writing, moving my body…

maybe this is true for you too.

maybe it’s easier to get thy rear into gear and pen to page when surrounded by a rad crew of generous makers all moving our hands together at the same time….let’s just see, shall we?

every month you receive

when you sign up for the Studio membership you get access to The Sprawl private podcast - ask your questions, and get unfiltered insights into my life and rhythms as a working artist at the end of empire tehe wild…and necessary!

each session will start with a somatic experience I’ll lead you through - so you can get TF out of your head, and tap into your intuition and embodied imagination. we’re practicing other approaches to creating besides overthinking and overmanaging.

we get together in the good ole zoom zone to MAKE and EXPRESS and CLEAR THE CHANNEL and HEAR OURSELVES and HEAR GOD and THE MUSES etc etc.

OH GAH this is the best part - every month we’ll have a special sesh where we look at what everyone’s working on. Like a talent show with zero pressure be impressive, just a space to freaking be witnessed being yourself, you know? and obviously a place to bask in each other’s brilliance, get ideas, be inspired, GET FED.

you opened up parts of my own exp artistically that are very shy without being beckoned,

i feel like you help me hear the spirits in me, because I feel so safe in your containers

Melissa is the kindest, most caring, most engaging facilitator I have ever met - I just felt so lucky to be in her sphere. I can't describe how magical the two hours each week felt. It was both Melissa’s presence, as well as the other participants - I think all of us felt that something special was being created - not just with thread and needle but also in the space between us. - MG, workshop participant + 1:1 client

Melissa is a wonderful guide through it all, bringing so much generosity and humor to each session, along with undeniable expertise as a facilitator. You feel and know you are in good hands. - KM, creative workshop participant

I felt so in my body, community, and creative/spiritual flow. It’s an act of love from my past self to my future self to be creatively ACCOUNTABLE. I got to say yes to things and feelings that I love saying yes to, but rarely carve out time too. And the people were PERFECT JUICY PEACHES I am so excited to see my friendships and quilting practice flourish

Melissa is curating a forum that’s the antithesis to old American ways of being together. It’s real community. It’s non heirarchical and non transactional. There’s nothing to consume. We’re learning to be together in radical new ways. We come together with our shit and just be with it all, and look at it, and smell each other. It’s a real place to belong. We came for class but got each other. Its why no one wanted to leave at the end of class! She’s tapping into ancient wisdom here - LS, workshop participant

I'm a coach and I'm just very impressed by people who can hold space for others this well and create that sense of belonging. People said so many things in class that I'll remember for so long, and I don't think that happens without you creating a mood of safety, but also inviting people to look at things in new ways. - KM, creative workshop participant
